How do I check a butcher is really HMC certified?
Ikhlas Halal Butcher
There are three things to check, and a genuinely HMC-certified butcher can show you all three: the yellow HMC certificate on the door with the shop’s own name printed on it, the HMC ink stamp on the carcasses hanging in the chiller, and the shop’s entry in the outlet search on halalhmc.org. A shop that says "halal" but cannot show you those is asking you to take its word.
The three checks
| Check | Where to look | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The certificate | Yellow HMC certificate on the door or wall, with the shop name and a certificate number | The premises are inspected and licensed to sell HMC meat. Look for the name, a generic HMC poster proves nothing. |
| 2. The stamp | Ink stamp on the carcass itself, leg, shoulder, rib | That animal was slaughtered under HMC supervision and stamped at the abattoir. The stamp travels with the meat. |
| 3. The register | halalhmc.org, "find an outlet", search the postcode | The shop is currently certified, not last year, now. |

Why the certificate alone is not enough
A certificate says the shop is licensed. It does not say every tray in the counter came through an HMC abattoir. Some shops hold a certificate and mix in uncertified stock. That is what the stamp is for: HMC-slaughtered carcasses are ink-stamped at the abattoir, and the stamps stay on the meat until it is cut. If you ask to see the chiller and there are no stamps on the hanging meat, you have your answer.
What HMC actually inspects
HMC, the Halal Monitoring Committee, is a UK charity that monitors the whole chain: the abattoir, the method of slaughter (hand slaughter, no stunning), transport, and the retail outlet. Inspectors visit certified shops unannounced and check that stock matches delivery notes from HMC abattoirs. A shop can lose its certificate for one uncertified delivery. That is why the certificate carries a number, and why the register at halalhmc.org is worth thirty seconds of your time.

What we can show you at Ikhlas
The certificate is on the glass at the door, next to the hygiene rating. Our lamb and mutton hang in the chiller behind the counter with the stamps visible. Our beef and chicken come from HMC-certified suppliers, ask at the counter and we will show you where they come from. If you order online, the same meat is cut for your order; there is no separate online stock.
HMC on the door, stamped on the carcass
Everything we sell, online or at the counter, is HMC certified, and you are welcome to ask to see it.

Is "halal" the same as "HMC"?
No. "Halal" is a claim anyone can make. HMC is a certification with an inspection behind it. Other certifiers exist (HFA is the other large UK body), and some permit stunning; HMC does not. If your family follows HMC, "halal" on a sign is not enough on its own.
Does HMC meat cost more?
At our counter, no, the HMC price is the only price. See our lamb prices per kilo.
Can I see the stamp on chicken?
Chicken is not ink-stamped the way lamb and beef carcasses are; HMC poultry is identified by HMC labelling on the packaging and the delivery from an HMC-approved plant. Ask to see it.
How do I report a shop I think is not genuine?
Through halalhmc.org. HMC investigates reports about shops using its name without certification.
