What "HMC-Certified" Actually Means: Halal Standards, Explained

“Halal” on a label can mean very different things depending on who’s standing behind it. At Ikhlas Halal Butcher, our City Road shop is HMC certified: and because halal is a matter of trust, we think it’s worth explaining exactly what that means.

Who are HMC?

HMC stands for the Halal Monitoring Committee, one of the most respected and rigorous halal certification bodies in the UK. What sets HMC apart is independent monitoring across the whole chain: not a one-off inspection, but ongoing checks from slaughter through to the point the meat reaches your kitchen.

Self-certified vs independently certified

A lot of meat is sold as “halal” on the word of the seller alone. There’s nothing independent verifying it. HMC certification means a third party, with no stake in the sale, is checking that the standards are genuinely being met. For something as important as this, that independent check is the difference that matters.

What HMC monitoring covers

  • Strict criteria for how the animal is slaughtered and handled
  • Traceability, so meat can be followed back through the supply chain
  • Separation of halal and non-halal stock to prevent cross-contamination
  • Regular, ongoing inspection rather than a single certificate on the wall

Our standards at Ikhlas

Alongside HMC certification, our shop holds a Food Hygiene Rating of 5, the highest the Food Standards Agency awards, so you have confidence in how the meat is handled and prepared, not just how it’s sourced. We’ve served Bradford since 2012 on exactly this basis: get the fundamentals right, every time. You can read more on our HMC Approved Halal page.

Don’t take our word for it

Our rating is awarded and published by the Food Standards Agency, scoring the top band for food handling, cleanliness of the premises and food safety management. It updates automatically, so what you see below is always our current rating.

Trust you can taste

Certification is the assurance; the meat is the proof. Everything we sell is cut fresh to order and prepared properly. Browse the range, or if you’ve any questions about our sourcing, get in touch, we’re always happy to explain.
