Why we stock it

  • Made in Bradford: blended by Mumtaz in the same city as the shop.
  • One pack, one dish: the whole spice mix for the dish is in the packet, no building a masala from eight jars.
  • Consistent: the same result every time, which is hard to manage grinding your own.
  • Halal throughout: suitable for a halal kitchen.
  • Comes with the meat: add it to a counter order and it goes in the same bag.

How to use it

Basaar is a starting point rather than a recipe. It is the base you build a dish on top of.

The base: onion, ginger, garlic, then a heaped spoon of basaar into the hot oil.

Build: tomato in, cooked until the oil separates, then whatever meat you are using.

Adjust: fresh chilli, garam masala or coriander at the end to point it at a dish.

Tip: take the large pack. If you cook this way at all you will get through the standard one inside a month, and the large is the better value of the two.

Goes well with

Anything on the counter. It is the mix that works with every cut we sell.

Ingredients & allergens

The full ingredient list and allergen declaration are printed on the pack. Recipes are set by Mumtaz and can change, so please read the label on the jar or tub you receive rather than relying on this page. Contact us before ordering if you have a specific allergy and we will check the current pack for you.

Storage

Keep in a cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Reseal the pack after each use and use by the date printed on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is basaar?

A Kashmiri and Mirpuri all-purpose masala, a red, mild base blend used as the foundation of most everyday cooking rather than for one named dish.

Is it hot?

No. It is deep and mild. The heat in a dish made with basaar comes from fresh or dried chilli added on top.

Is it halal?

Yes. Mumtaz is a halal food producer and the whole range is suitable for a halal kitchen.

Where is it made?

Bradford. Mumtaz have produced from the city for over forty years, which is why we stock them alongside our own counter.

Do you deliver?
