What changed

For years, buying halal meat in Bradford meant one of two things. You went to the butcher, queued, and told the man behind the counter what you wanted. Or you ordered from an online halal supermarket and a courier turned up the next day with meat that had been packed the day before. The first one gives you the cut you actually want. The second one gives you convenience. You could not have both.

Our new website is built to give you both. The online counter lists every product the shop sells, arranged the way the counter is: chicken, lamb, beef, mutton, goat and turkey. You choose the cut, the pack size and how you want it prepared, add a note if there is anything else, and pay. The order prints on a ticket at the counter and one of the butchers cuts it. Nothing is pre-packed and nothing is picked off a shelf.

Why it is easy now, in five parts

1. Every cut is online, at the counter price

Curry cut lamb on the bone, boneless mutton leg, whole chicken skinned and cut into eight, beef shin for nihari, lamb trotters for paya, kebab mince, ribeye. If the counter sells it, the website sells it, and the price is the same one on the ticket in the chiller. There is no online mark-up and no service fee. We took the counter price list and put it online, that is all.

2. You still tell the butcher how you want it

This is the bit online supermarkets cannot do. Each product has its own options, and every line has a note box. "Chops cut thick." "Trim the fat." "Curry cut small, for the kids." "Two legs whole, the rest diced." The note prints on the ticket the butcher works from, exactly as if you had said it across the counter. If you would rather talk it through, WhatsApp the counter and we build the order for you.

3. Collection is free and usually ready in about 2 hours

Order on the way to work, collect on the way home. The shop is open 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, with parking outside and a ramp to the door. Give the name on the order and it is handed over from the chiller behind the counter. Anything ordered after 6pm is cut first thing the next morning. There is no minimum for collection.

4. Delivery is free within 7 miles, by our own driver

No courier and no next-day box. Our driver does two runs a day, 1pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Order by 12 for the afternoon, by 5 for the evening. The meat is cut and vacuum packed after you order and goes out chilled the same day. Delivery is free with a £25 minimum order. The 7-mile circle covers Manningham, Heaton, Frizinghall, Girlington, Allerton, Shipley, Saltaire, Baildon, Bingley, Thornton, Queensbury, Clayton, Great Horton, Idle, Eccleshill, Wibsey, Pudsey, Halifax. The full detail is on the delivery and collection page.

5. You can check everything before you trust us

Three things you can verify without taking our word for it. Our HMC certificate is on the door and the shop is listed on the Halal Monitoring Committee website; here is how to check any butcher. Our food hygiene rating is 5, the highest, awarded by Bradford Council and published on the Food Standards Agency register, with no points deducted for hygiene, for the premises or for food safety management at the last inspection. And our Google rating is 4.8 out of 5 from more than 70 reviews, on the City Road listing.

Who this suits

People who know what they want and do not want to queue for it. Families in Manningham, Heaton and Girlington who walk past the shop and would rather have it ready. People in Shipley, Bingley or Baildon who want a proper halal butcher without the drive. Anyone cooking for a dawat who needs 5 kilos of curry cut and a whole leg on a Friday and wants it sorted by Thursday night. Anyone who has ever got home with a pack of mutton cut the wrong size.

It is not for everyone. If you are more than 7 miles away and cannot get to City Road, we cannot help yet; we do not post meat. And if you want to look at the tray before you choose, the shop is still the shop, 9am to 7pm, six days a week. The website is a second door to the same counter, not a replacement for it.

Halal, hygiene and the reviews, in plain words

HMC certified. Every animal is hand slaughtered by a Muslim slaughterman with the tasmiyah recited, and HMC inspectors monitor the chain from the abattoir to our counter. HMC is independent and not for profit. Halal meat, explained covers what the certification checks and how it differs from a sign that just says halal.

The HMC ink stamp goes on at the abattoir and is still on the meat when it reaches the counter.

Clean. A food hygiene rating is not a badge a shop gives itself. Bradford Council inspects, the Food Standards Agency publishes. Ours is 5, the top band, and the inspection found nothing to deduct in any of the three areas it scores: hygienic handling, the condition of the premises, and how food safety is managed.

Rated by customers. 4.8 out of 5 on Google from more than 70 reviews. Read them on the City Road listing; the ones about the cutting and the service are the ones we care about.

Questions people also ask

Can I order halal meat online in Bradford?

Yes. Ikhlas Halal Butcher on City Road takes orders at ikhlashalalbutcher.co.uk for free collection from the shop or free delivery within 7 miles. Every cut on the counter is on the site, at the counter price, and it is cut after you order.

Is it more expensive to order online than in the shop?

No. The price on the website is the price on the till. There is no online premium and no service charge. Delivery within 7 miles is free with a £25 minimum order, and collection is free with no minimum.

How quickly is an online order ready?

Collection orders are usually ready in about 2 hours. Anything placed after 6pm is cut first thing the next morning, from 9am. Delivery goes out in two runs a day, 1pm to 4pm (order by 12) and 6pm to 8pm (order by 5), Monday to Saturday.

Is the meat HMC certified?

Yes, all of it. Ikhlas is certified and monitored by the Halal Monitoring Committee, the certificate is on the shop door, and the listing can be checked on the HMC website.

Can I still ask for it cut my way?

Yes. Each product has its own options (on the bone or boneless, curry cut size, skin on or off) and an order note for anything else, such as chops cut thick, fat trimmed, or a whole chicken cut into eight. The note prints on the ticket the butcher works from.

Do you deliver outside Bradford?

Delivery covers a 7-mile circle around the shop, which reaches Shipley, Bingley, Baildon, Queensbury, Thornton, Pudsey and Halifax. Beyond that, collection from City Road is free. Meat is not sent by post or courier.

Do I need an account to order?

No. You can check out as a guest with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you order regularly, an account keeps your address and past orders so a repeat order takes about a minute.
